Milena Salazar on a shoot location Salt Lake City for Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama.

Our creative team has started production on Between Pictures: The Lens of Tamio Wakayama a 60 minute animated and live action documentary film on the photographer Tamio Wakayama and his journey as a student photographer for The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) amidst the civil rights movement in the deep south and into his photographic work in Japan and Vancouver that returns the lens back to his own cultural identity. Cinematographer, Milena Salazar, and I have just started filming the interviews for this project starting with Les Kelen, the Executive Director of the Center for Documentary Expression and Art and the editor of This Light of Ours: Activists Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement. There will be more to come as we continue our journey meeting more of Tamio’s long time friends.
